CIEE Sustainability and Community Program in Stellenbosch, South Africa
The Sustainability and Community study abroad program at the CIEE Study Center at Stellenbosch University will provide you with both theoretical grounding and practical experience in urban studies, ecology, community, and sustainable living.
Through a combination of CIEE and Stellenbosch University courses, field-based experiential learning, and special activities organized by CIEE through its relationship with Stellenbosch University and its affiliated Sustainability Institute, you will learn firsthand about the issues and challenges impacting South Africa and the global community today while exploring and evaluating sustainable practices within specific community settings.
Study abroad in Stellenbosch and you will have access to:
Innovative CIEE and Stellenbosch University courses on issues and themes related to sustainability and community
Special CIEE pre-term Building Sustainable Communities module that allows students to live, study, and volunteer at the Sustainability Institute and interact with members of the associated eco-village community
CIEE field trips and excursions with a focus on ecology, natural resource management, community development, and sustainable agriculture
CIEE community service projects with historically disadvantaged communities around Stellenbosch, including opportunities with schools, NGOs, and public-health organizations
Special activities coordinated by CIEE through its partnership with the Sustainability Institute, including academic and experiential modules, guest lectures, and local activities that allow for firsthand exploration of the challenges facing global communities today
